Bessent Presses China to Intensify Iran Diplomacy Before Trump-Xi Summit

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged China to significantly step up its diplomatic engagement on Iran in advance of an anticipated summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. The appeal reflects Washington's strategy of leveraging high-stakes bilateral moments to extract broader multilateral concessions, particularly on issues where Beijing holds significant influence over Tehran.

Iran's nuclear programme and its regional activities have been a persistent source of friction in US foreign policy, and Washington has long sought to use China's economic relationships with Tehran as leverage for behavioural modification.
