CCP Clears Arif Habib Consortium's Acquisition of National Carrier PIA
The Competition Commission of Pakistan has granted formal approval to the acquisition of Pakistan International Airlines by a consortium led by Arif Habib Group, clearing a critical regulatory hurdle in the privatisation of the national carrier. The CCP's green light removes one of the final structural barriers to the transfer of PIA's ownership to private hands.
The Arif Habib-led consortium had emerged as the preferred acquirer following a protracted privatisation process that included multiple delays, bidder withdrawals, and political controversy. The CCP's mandate required it to assess whether the transaction would distort market competition in Pakistan's aviation sector before approving the deal.
The approval marks a significant milestone in the government's privatisation agenda, which has long identified PIA as a priority divestment given the airline's accumulated losses, debt burden, and operational inefficiencies. Successful completion of the acquisition would constitute one of the largest privatisation transactions in Pakistan's recent economic history.
Final transfer of ownership remains subject to additional regulatory and contractual formalities between the consortium and the government. The timeline for formal handover and the terms under which PIA's existing liabilities will be managed are expected to be clarified in the coming weeks as the transaction moves toward closure.
