D-8 Nations Hold Ministerial Consultation on Visa Facilitation

Member states of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation convened a high-level consultation on Monday focused on visa facilitation, signalling renewed commitment among developing Muslim-majority economies to reducing barriers to people and business mobility.

The D-8 grouping — comprising Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey — has historically sought to deepen economic cooperation, with travel facilitation being a recurring agenda item given its direct relevance to trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

Visa liberalisation among D-8 members carries significant potential for expanding intra-bloc trade and investment flows, which currently represent a fraction of each member state's external economic engagement. Streamlined travel for business travellers and investors is widely seen as a prerequisite for unlocking deeper commercial relationships.

Pakistan, as a founding member, has a particular interest in improved mobility frameworks with key D-8 partners including Turkey, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The outcome of Monday's consultation is expected to inform a broader D-8 agenda on economic integration.
