Health Minister Vows Probe Into Global Fund Irregularities, Reviews HIV Data

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has pledged a formal investigation into alleged irregularities in the management of Global Fund grants for Pakistan's HIV programme, while simultaneously presenting updated data on the country's HIV burden during a high-level policy briefing.

The minister's announcement follows concerns raised about financial management and oversight lapses in programmes funded through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a major multilateral health financing mechanism through which Pakistan receives substantial public health support.

Pakistan's HIV epidemic has been a subject of serious concern, with Pakistan among the countries experiencing some of the fastest-growing HIV rates in Asia. The integrity of funding programmes designed to prevent transmission, provide treatment, and support affected communities is therefore of direct public health consequence.

Kamal indicated that the probe would be conducted transparently and that findings would be shared with relevant stakeholders including the Global Fund itself, signalling an intent to maintain Pakistan's credibility as a recipient country and preserve future funding access.

The dual announcement, addressing both the financial integrity issue and the epidemiological situation, suggests the Health Ministry is attempting to reassure international partners while also taking ownership of programme accountability.
