HEC Chairman Stresses Universities' Critical Role in National Development

Higher Education Commission Chairman Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Akhtar emphasised the indispensable role of universities in driving societal development during a visit to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, where he was received by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Kamran. The engagement formed part of the HEC's ongoing outreach to institutions across the country.

The Chairman's remarks are consistent with HEC's current policy direction, which seeks to shift Pakistani higher education from credential-focused models toward research output, community engagement, and applied problem-solving. Universities have been under sustained pressure to demonstrate tangible linkages between academic work and national development priorities.

The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, one of Pakistan's oldest and most established public universities, has been undertaking internal reforms and academic restructuring in recent years. The HEC Chairman's visit is likely to reinforce institutional accountability expectations and may be associated with upcoming funding or accreditation cycles.

The visit also highlights the HEC's role as a quality assurance and policy coordination body at a time when Pakistan's higher education sector faces pressures from reduced public funding, faculty retention challenges, and the need to expand digital and research infrastructure.
