Their valleys are also known for exceptional biodiversity and dramatic mountain landscapes.
Inclusion on the tentative list is a prerequisite for formal UNESCO World Heritage nomination and represents the government's intent to pursue full inscription in the coming years. The listing requires Pakistan to develop a comprehensive management plan addressing conservation, tourism pressure, and community welfare.
The move is likely to boost cultural tourism to the remote Chitral district while simultaneously placing obligations on authorities to safeguard the Kalash way of life from the pressures of commercialisation and climate change.
Cultural heritage advocates welcomed the development, calling it overdue recognition for one of South Asia's most endangered indigenous cultures. The government will now need to submit a formal nomination dossier to UNESCO for evaluation.
