Pakistan, China Sign Ten MoUs on Medicine Raw Materials and Vaccines

Pakistan and China signed ten memoranda of understanding on Tuesday covering the local production of pharmaceutical raw materials and vaccines, advancing a bilateral agenda to reduce Pakistan's dependence on imported medicines and strengthen domestic healthcare manufacturing capacity. The agreements were formalised during a high-level engagement between officials from both countries.

The MoUs span a range of pharmaceutical categories including active pharmaceutical ingredients, which Pakistan currently imports at significant cost, and vaccine production infrastructure intended to reduce vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions. The agreements are aligned with Pakistan's broader industrial policy push to localise strategic manufacturing sectors.

Beijing has in recent years expanded its footprint in Pakistan's healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors as part of wider CPEC-linked economic cooperation, with several Chinese pharmaceutical companies exploring joint ventures with Pakistani counterparts. The latest agreements are expected to attract Chinese investment into dedicated production facilities in Pakistan.

Health officials described the signing as a significant step toward pharmaceutical self-sufficiency, though analysts noted that translating MoUs into operational production capacity typically requires several years of investment, regulatory alignment, and technology transfer before tangible outcomes materialise.
