Pakistan Records Three Polio Cases In 2026 As Outbreak Widens
Pakistan has confirmed two new polio cases, bringing the total count for the current year to three, authorities announced on Friday. The development signals a renewed public health challenge for a country still striving to eradicate the crippling disease despite years of intensive vaccination campaigns.
Polio remains endemic in Pakistan, one of only two countries in the world where wild poliovirus transmission has not been halted. Each confirmed case represents a significant setback for national eradication efforts and raises fresh concerns about vaccination coverage gaps, particularly in remote and conflict-affected regions.
Health officials and the National Emergency Operations Centre have not yet disclosed the provinces or districts where the new cases were detected. Epidemiological tracing and intensified immunisation drives are expected to follow in the affected areas as part of the standard outbreak response protocol.
The cumulative tally of three cases in the opening months of 2026 underscores the fragility of progress made in recent years. International health partners, including the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, continue to support Pakistan's eradication programme through surveillance, laboratory testing, and community-level vaccination mobilisation.
