PM Shehbaz Inaugurates Safe City Projects in Gilgit and Skardu

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday inaugurated Safe City projects in Gilgit and Skardu, marking a significant expansion of modern urban surveillance and security infrastructure into Gilgit-Baltistan. The projects are designed to enhance public safety, improve emergency response capabilities, and bring the region's security architecture in line with major urban centres.

The Safe City initiative integrates networked CCTV systems, command and control centres, and emergency communication infrastructure. Gilgit and Skardu, as the two principal cities of Gilgit-Baltistan, are expected to see substantially improved law enforcement capacity as a result of these installations.

The inauguration is part of a broader federal push to extend development dividends to Pakistan's northernmost territory, which has historically lagged behind in security and civic infrastructure investment. The PM's visit also included interaction with beneficiaries of youth development schemes in the region, reinforcing the political messaging around federal investment in GB.

Gilgit-Baltistan holds strategic importance both as a gateway to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and as a region that borders China and the disputed territory of Ladakh. Improved urban security infrastructure is seen as complementary to the broader CPEC-linked development ambitions in the area.
