Saudi Arabia Activates Smart Emergency Management System for Hajj Season

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has formally activated an award-winning smart emergency management system ahead of the peak Hajj season, deploying advanced real-time monitoring and response coordination technology to manage crowd safety and medical emergencies across the holy sites. The system is designed to handle the scale and complexity of managing over two million pilgrims simultaneously.

The platform integrates sensor networks, AI-assisted crowd density monitoring, and centralised command facilities to enable faster dispatch of emergency personnel and medical teams. Saudi authorities have described the system as a significant upgrade from previous analogue and semi-digital arrangements, particularly in its ability to predict and pre-empt crowd compression events.

The activation carries particular relevance for Pakistani pilgrims, with approximately 118,000 Pakistanis registered for this year's Hajj. Pakistani mission officials in Saudi Arabia have been coordinating with local authorities on the phased movement of pilgrims between Makkah, Mina, and Arafat.

Saudi Arabia has in recent years invested heavily in Hajj safety infrastructure following historical incidents involving crowd-related casualties. The smart emergency system is part of a broader Vision 2030 aligned modernisation of religious site management that aims to raise service standards while progressively increasing the annual pilgrimage quota.
