World Book and Copyright Day Observed with Focus on Reading Culture
World Book and Copyright Day was observed globally on April 23 with events and initiatives centred on renewing commitment to reading culture, intellectual property rights, and the transformative power of literature. Educational institutions, publishers, libraries, and governments across the world marked the occasion with targeted programmes.
UNESCO-designated World Book Day serves as an annual reminder of the importance of books as tools of education, cultural exchange, and human development. This year's observance carried added emphasis on the challenges posed by declining reading habits among youth in the digital age.
In Pakistan, cultural organisations and educational bodies participated in observances that highlighted the need for greater investment in libraries, literacy programmes, and affordable book access. Publishers and authors used the platform to advocate for stronger enforcement of copyright protections.
The day also recognises the death anniversary of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, two of literature's most enduring figures, lending the observance a historical gravitas that connects contemporary reading culture to its deep civilisational roots.
