Extreme Heat Alert Issued as Temperatures May Reach 52°C
Meteorological authorities have issued a severe heat alert for Pakistan, warning that temperatures in parts of the country could soar to as high as 52 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The forecast represents an extreme weather event with significant implications for public health, agriculture, and energy infrastructure.
The forecast is expected to affect large swathes of interior Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, regions already under stress from rising baseline temperatures driven by climate change. Health authorities have been placed on alert, with hospitals and emergency services instructed to prepare for a potential surge in heat-related illnesses.
The power sector faces its own pressure as household and industrial cooling demand is projected to spike sharply, testing the limits of an already strained national grid. Officials warned of possible load management measures if generation capacity is insufficient to meet peak demand.
Experts have linked the intensifying heat events to Pakistan's broader climate vulnerability, noting that the country ranks among the most at-risk nations globally for extreme weather. Authorities urged citizens in affected areas to minimise outdoor exposure, ensure adequate hydration, and heed official health advisories.
