NDMA Issues Storm and Flood Warning for Northern Pakistan Through May 5
The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a formal multi-hazard weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, hailstorms, and an elevated risk of flash flooding across northern Pakistan from May 2 through May 5. The alert covers vulnerable mountain districts where rapid weather changes pose acute risks to communities, infrastructure, and road connectivity.
The advisory specifically identifies northern regions, including areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and adjacent zones, as being in the path of a significant weather system. NDMA has directed provincial disaster management authorities and district administrations to activate emergency protocols, pre-position response resources, and maintain communication channels with communities in flood-prone valleys.
Residents in affected areas have been warned against river crossings, travel through vulnerable mountain passes, and construction activity in flood channel proximity. NDMA has also cautioned against the use of nullahs and low-lying drainage corridors during peak rainfall events, which are expected to produce rapid runoff given current soil saturation levels.
The advisory comes amid a broader pattern of early-season weather intensification observed across South Asia, which climate officials have linked to shifting monsoon precursor systems. Emergency services and rescue teams have been placed on standby across the designated alert zones.
