PDMA Issues GLOF Alert for Upper Pakistan Amid Westerly Wave

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood alert for upper regions of Pakistan following the onset of a moderate westerly weather wave, authorities announced Saturday. The alert signals elevated risk of flash flooding from glacial melt and unstable high-altitude water bodies across vulnerable mountain zones.

GLOF events pose acute risks to communities in the high-altitude valleys of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, where dozens of glacial lakes have been identified as potentially unstable. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying downstream areas to remain vigilant and to follow evacuation advisories should water levels rise rapidly.

The westerly weather system is expected to bring precipitation and temperature fluctuations to northern mountain belts, conditions historically associated with accelerated glacial melt. PDMA officials have activated monitoring protocols and coordination with district administrations in affected zones.

Pakistan is among the countries most acutely exposed to glacial hazards globally, with climate change accelerating glacial retreat and lake formation across the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalayan ranges. The alert underscores the continued vulnerability of upland communities to climate-driven hydrological events.
