PDMA Issues Punjab Heat Alert as Temperatures Expected to Soar
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Punjab has issued a formal heat alert across the province, warning that temperatures are set to rise sharply in the coming days and urging citizens and institutions to take precautionary measures. The alert reflects growing concern among emergency management officials about the health and safety risks associated with extreme heat events.
PDMA advised residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, ensure adequate hydration, and take special care of vulnerable populations including the elderly, children, and outdoor labourers. Local government bodies and hospitals have been directed to heighten readiness and ensure cooling facilities are available at public sites.
Punjab has experienced increasingly severe heat spells in recent years, a trend linked by climate experts to the broader pattern of rising temperatures across South Asia. The early timing of this year's alert suggests that the heat season may be arriving sooner and with greater intensity than in previous years.
Health officials are particularly concerned about heat-related illnesses in densely populated urban areas such as Lahore and Faisalabad, where the urban heat island effect amplifies ambient temperatures. Authorities have asked media outlets to disseminate safety messaging widely to ensure public preparedness.
